St. Mary’s Colgan girls basketball scored 25 of the last 27 points in the first half Thursday night on the way to a 69-38 win over Frontenac in CNC League play at the SMC Fieldhouse.
Senior point guard Jakayla Davis finished with a game-high 41 points, highlighted by 25 points in the first half and 17 of them during that decisive 25-2 run. She made seven of the Panthers’ 11 3-point baskets and ran her career points total to 1,926; she’s looking at 2,000 career points over the next couple games.
Mari Gilmore added 10 and Bella Ascanio and Janessa Davis each produced six points.
Reece Franklin and Marlee Stout led Frontenac with 15 and 13 points, respectively.
“I thought we came out and executed very cleanly,” Colgan girls coach Abby Farabi said. “The kids played with a lot of energy and really focused on the things we talked about before the game. They made a little run and sped us up a bit but we settled back in and were able to get some stops when we needed them.”
Colgan outscored Frontenac 22-2 in the second quarter. The Panthers seem to have at least one dominant quarter in every one of their league victories.
The Panthers, ranked sixth in Class 2A by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, improved to 16-2 on the season and 9-0 in league play entering their home game Friday night against Galena. Colgan rolled Galena 66-19 in their previous meeting Jan. 13.
Colgan remains second in the 2A Northeast sub-state, behind unbeaten and 2A No. 1-ranked Eureka (18-0) and just ahead of sub-state host Northeast (16-3).
The Panthers improved to 9-1 at home this season.
The Raiders, ranked ninth in 3A, dropped to 13-4 and 6-2 CNC and saw their winning streak end at three games. Frontenac returned to action Friday night at home with Baxter Springs; Frontenac defeated the Lions 58-13 back on Jan. 13.
Thursday marked the second-worst defeat for the Raiders this season. Class 5A top-ranked Andover (15-1) owns that distinction. Three of the Raiders’ four losses have been against ranked opponents.
