Dagen Brewer broke Pittsburg State’s home run record, and Seth Dandridge belted a go-ahead shot in the seventh inning as the No. 5 Gorillas rallied to beat Washburn 10-7 Thursday in the opening game of their MIAA baseball series at Steve Anson Stadium in Topeka.
With two games left in the regular season, the Gorillas (39-8, 26-8 MIAA) claimed sole possession of first place a few hours later when Rogers State lost at Missouri Western 10-2. Missouri Southern moved into a tie for second with its 7-6 victory at Central Missouri, which eliminated the Mules from conference contention.
Northwest Missouri dropped into fourth place two games behind the Gorillas with its 11-3 loss to Central Oklahoma.
Brewer, senior left fielder from Topeka, connected for a solo homer in the fifth inning and a two-run shot in the sixth. That gave him 23 homers this season and 47 for his two-year career, breaking the PSU career record of 46 by Andrew Vogelbaugh from 2015-18.
The Gorillas trailed 7-2 after four innings but used the long ball during their rally.
Brewer’s homers helped pull PSU within 7-6 after six innings, and Andrew Branson singled to left with one out in the seventh before Dandridge hit a two-run homer to right, his second of the season, off Fidel Hatch (2-3) for an 8-7 lead.
Eric Bacon’s bases-loaded, two-out single plated two insurance runs in the ninth, capping his 4-for-5 performance with three RBI and two runs scored.
Brewer, Cooper Wesslund, Branson and Landon Bruce contributed two hits apiece to the Gorillas’ 14-hit attack.
Reliever Ricardo Hernandez (1-0) limited the Ichabods to two hits with one strikeout in 2 1/3 scoreless innings. Cason Long gave up one hit and fanned four in the last three innings for his first save.
Washburn (20-28, 16-18) roughed up PSU starter Bradyn McClure for seven runs and eight hits in 2/3 innings. McClure walked three and fanned three.
The Ichabods hit three homers – Brooks Richardson with a runner on base in the second inning, Ian Luce to start the third inning and Brandt Beeby to open the fourth inning.
Levi Risenhoover had two hits, including a bases-loaded triple to right-center for the 7-2 lead in the fourth.
The Gorillas and Ichabods played again on Friday and end the series at 1 p.m. Saturday.
